Why QMAP?
The Queer Mail Art Project (QMAP) invites submissions from all members of the LGBTQ+ community and allies, with a focus on preserving and honoring the queer experience for future generations. Please share your own story or that of someone you love.
We’re living through a complex time—queer issues are more visible than ever, yet globally, there’s a disturbing rise in legal and societal rollbacks targeting queer people. It’s crucial to document the personal, emotional, and everyday realities of these changes; and, it’s equally important to do so in a way that protects those living in hostile or unsafe environments.
What will happen to my mail?
Inspired by Katie Paterson’s Future Library project, all mail submitted to QMAP will remain sealed for 100 years. During that time, envelopes will be exhibited with all identifying information redacted. These sealed pieces will spark reflection, raise awareness, and preserve the weight of each contribution without compromising privacy.
After a century, the letters will be opened, scanned, and archived in a publicly accessible digital database. The goal is simple: to ensure that future queer people can see themselves reflected in the past—our struggles, joys, fears, and dreams remembered.
